“Nakamura Hōchū – Puppy, from the Kōrin Gafu”
Edo period, 1802 – Collection of the National Institute of Japanese Literature

A Beloved Masterpiece Reimagined in Pottery – “Puppy” by Hōchū

Nakamura Hōchū, a painter from the Edo period in Japan, was known for his playful and humorous brushwork. His gentle, loose sketches—especially of adorable puppies—continue to charm viewers even today.

Now, this timeless artwork has been reborn through the hands of a Kyoto-based ceramic artisan, as a delightful guinomi sake cup you can hold in your palm. Handmade in Kyoto, this piece blends Japan’s traditional artistry with a fresh, modern sensibility.

Soft, Rounded Form – Crafted by Hand

Each cup is individually shaped by hand, giving it a charmingly rounded silhouette that fits naturally in your hand.

Both whimsical and practical, this guinomi offers a beautiful balance of traditional Japanese design and functional everyday use. Perfect for enjoying sake or simply admiring as a piece of ceramic art.

A Playful Form, Just Like a Puppy

It gently wobbles when placed on the table—just like a puppy rolling around in play.

The delightful movement and endearing design are sure to make you smile. This handmade Kyoto pottery piece adds a comforting touch of warmth to any moment.
