“Puppy” by Nakamura Hōchū – Kōrin Gafu, Edo period (1802)
Collection of the National Institute of Japanese Literature

A Classic Japanese Painting Reimagined in Pottery – “Puppy” by Hōchū

Nakamura Hōchū, an Edo-period painter from Japan, was known for his gentle and humorous style.

His charming puppy, drawn in a soft and whimsical touch, continues to win hearts even today.

Now, this traditional artwork has been revived by a Kyoto ceramic artist as a handmade guinomi—an adorable sake cup you can enjoy in the palm of your hand.

Rounded Form, Crafted by Hand

Each piece is lovingly handmade, featuring a softly rounded silhouette that invites you to pick it up.

This traditional ceramic sake cup combines delightful form with practical use—perfect for a relaxing drink or simply admiring on your shelf.

It brings warmth and calm with every touch, making everyday moments feel just a little more special.

A Playful Presence Like a Puppy

Its gentle rocking motion on a tabletop resembles a playful puppy tumbling about.

Full of joy and charm, this handmade piece from Kyoto pottery offers not just function but also emotional delight.

Let this small guinomi bring a bit of soothing tradition to your daily rituals.
