The Craftsmanship of Mizuki Yoshida

Shoki, the Protector Figurine

Mizuki Yoshida, a young Kyoto-based ceramic artist, crafts unique Shoki figurines.

Shoki has long been revered as a symbol of protection against evil and misfortune.

Through Yoshida's work, this traditional guardian deity is brought back to life with a contemporary touch.

What is Shoki?

Shoki originates from Taoist traditions in China.

He is portrayed with a dignified appearance: long beard, official attire, and a sword in hand, exuding a commanding presence.

In Kyoto, Shoki figurines have been placed on tile roofs to ward off calamities and bring protection.

During the Edo period, Shoki statues became a popular alternative to traditional demon tiles, embodying cultural and spiritual significance much like Okinawa's Shisa.

Even today, while tiled roofs are less common, you can spot homes in Kyoto adorned with Shoki figurines.

The Work of Mizuki Yoshida

Mizuki Yoshida's Shoki figurines retain their traditional majesty while incorporating the softness and warmth of handmade ceramics.

During her university years, she was captivated by the Shoki statues she discovered atop Kyoto's machiya townhouses.

Inspired by their strong presence, Yoshida blends tradition with her artistic sensibilities to create Shoki figurines that feel both historic and modern.

From small decorative pieces to larger statement items, each handcrafted Shoki radiates warmth and artistry.

Yoshida's Shoki figurines preserve the historical essence of this guardian deity while adding the tactile charm of ceramic craftsmanship.

They bring strength and protection to your space, blending the beauty of traditional Kyoto pottery with a sense of everyday warmth.
