The Craftsmanship of Mizuki Yoshida
Shoki, the Protector Figurine
Mizuki Yoshida, a talented young ceramic artist from Kyoto, creates exquisite Shoki figurines.
Shoki has long been cherished as a symbol of protection against evil and misfortune.
Yoshida breathes new life into this traditional guardian deity, preserving its essence while adapting it for modern times.
What is Shoki?
Shoki is a deity originating from Taoist traditions in China.
Known for his imposing appearance, Shoki is depicted with a long beard, official attire, and a sword, embodying a commanding presence.

In Kyoto, Shoki figurines have traditionally been placed on rooftops to ward off disasters.
During the Edo period, Shoki figurines became a cultural fixture in Kyoto, replacing demon tiles as a protective charm. This tradition, deeply rooted in Japanese culture, parallels similar customs like Okinawa's Shisa statues.
Even today, as tile roofs become less common, you can still find homes in Kyoto adorned with Shoki figurines.
Mizuki Yoshida’s Artistry
Yoshida’s Shoki figurines retain their traditional majesty while adding the soft and warm touch unique to handmade ceramics.
Her passion for Shoki began during her university years when she encountered these statues on the roofs of Kyoto’s machiya townhouses.
Captivated by their presence, Yoshida blends traditional craftsmanship with her artistic vision, creating Shoki figurines that are both historic and contemporary.

From small decorative pieces to larger statement items, each Shoki figurine radiates warmth and character, making them perfect for any interior.

Yoshida’s Shoki figurines honor their rich history while incorporating the tactile charm of handmade Kyoto pottery.
Their presence offers both strength and protection, seamlessly blending the beauty of traditional craftsmanship with everyday life.
