Shoki Statues: Talismans against Evil

Ceramic Shoki (Zhong Kui) figures created by Mizuki Yoshida, a young potter from Kyoto.

Shoki has long been regarded as a symbol of protection against evil and misfortune.

This guardian deity, almost forgotten with the changing times, has been given new life.

What is Shoki?

Shoki is a deity originating from Taoism in China.

His dignified appearance is characterized by a long beard, official's attire, and a majestic stance holding a sword.

(Shoki-zu by Sesshu. Edo period)

In Kyoto, Shoki figures have been placed on tiled roofs as a cherished charm to ward off disasters since ancient times.

By placing Shoki, who is believed to be stronger than demons, on the roof as a charm against evil in place of oni-gawara (demon tiles), Shoki statues became a widespread custom in Kyoto during the Edo period.

They are deeply intertwined with culture and customs, much like oni-gawara and Okinawa's Shisa.

Even with fewer tiled roofs today, walking through the streets of Kyoto reveals houses with Shoki displayed on their roofs.

Mizuki Yoshida's Handicrafts

Mizuki Yoshida's Shoki statues retain their dignified appearance while possessing a charm that exudes the unique softness and warmth of ceramics.

Her passion for Shoki began during her university days when she encountered a Shoki statue perched on the roof tiles of a Kyoto townhouse.

Captivated by its presence, Yoshida creates Shoki statues that respect tradition while incorporating her own sensibilities.

From small items to large decorative pieces that enhance interiors, all her creations convey the warmth of handmade craftsmanship.

Mizuki Yoshida's Shoki carefully unravels its history and background, reproducing the historical appearance of Shoki while adding the unique warmth of ceramics to the design.

Their presence possesses the strength to protect families and spaces, while quietly adding the beauty of handmade craftsmanship and tradition to everyday life.
