A Hand-Painted Cat-Themed Tableware Set

Blending Tradition with Playful Artistry

Yoshinori Mitani, a skilled artisan based in Fushimi, Kyoto, operates Furyu Kiln.

After years of training at a Kyo-ware and Kiyomizu-ware kiln specializing in tea ceremony utensils, Mitani became an independent artist, mastering the traditional blue-and-white sometsuke technique to depict cats with remarkable detail.

This charming tamago kake gohan (Japanese rice with raw egg) set includes a spouted bowl for cracking eggs and a small rice bowl, each adorned with delightful hand-painted illustrations.

A cat holding a chicken is playfully depicted on the spouted bowl—ready to collect its egg.

The delicate brushwork captures the cat’s whimsical expression, framed by traditional Japanese motifs that add a timeless charm.

Mitani’s work beautifully embodies the spirit of Kyo-ware and Kiyomizu-ware—infusing modern storytelling into traditional craftsmanship.

The rice bowl features a satisfied cat, full and content after a delicious meal.

Crafted using the durable sometsuke painting technique, this set is both microwave and dishwasher safe.

Designed for daily use, it maintains its beauty over time.
