Shunzan Kiln, a legacy passed down in Sennyu-ji Temple, Kyoto

Founded in 1917 at the foot of Sennyu-ji Temple in Higashiyama, Kyoto, Shunzan Kiln continues to create ceramics that embody the beauty of painting and decoration, taking inspiration from seasonal flowers and classical designs while preserving the tradition of Kiyomizu ware.

Each chawan (tea bowl) is handcrafted, displaying the delicate elegance characteristic of Kyoto pottery, with various expressions to enjoy depending on the viewing angle.

Rich expressions born from repeated handwork

The charm of Shunzan Kiln lies in the rich expression created by the harmony of the vessel's form, painting, glaze, and decoration.

Beginning with delicate brushwork, some pieces incorporate techniques such as gold painting, luster painting, and slip-trailing, with layers of handwork meticulously applied to each chawan.

While ornate, they are not overly embellished, retaining the soft texture of the clay and glaze, which speaks to the refined quality characteristic of Shunzan Kiln.

Chawan that can be enjoyed both by admiring and by using

What Shunzan Kiln values is to create "vessels that bring joy to both viewing and using."

The meticulously crafted decorations offer the pleasure of appreciation, while holding the chawan in hand reveals its warmth as a tea bowl.

This piece is not only a tea bowl for enjoying seasonal tea, but also a work you'll want to keep close and enjoy for a long time as a vessel that allows you to experience Kyoto craftsmanship intimately.

Comes in a wooden box.

This matcha bowl will be delivered in a wooden box with a texture befitting the atmosphere of the work.
The inscription on the box is handwritten by the artist themselves, adding value as proof of the work.

It is suitable not only for personal use but also as a special gift.

Please use it as a heartfelt gift for celebrations or seasonal greetings to your loved ones.

Comment from the Owner

This is a matcha bowl from Shunzan Kiln, featuring a boldly shaved form and paintings of red and white plum blossoms.

The powerful and expressive form is adorned with gracefully drawn red and white plum blossoms, depicting a vibrant early spring scene. Red and white plum blossoms have long been cherished as an auspicious design adorning the New Year, creating a bright atmosphere even amidst the rustic texture of the clay.

It is a quintessential Shunzan Kiln bowl, where powerful sculpting and delicate painting are beautifully harmonized.
