Mizuki Yoshida's Craftsmanship

Shoki Statues for Wardinga Off Evil

Ceramic figurines of Shoki made by Mizuki Yoshida, a young potter from Kyoto.

Shoki has long been revered as a symbol of warding off evil and misfortune.

This guardian deity, almost forgotten with the changing times, has been given new life.

What is Shoki?

Shoki is a deity originating from Chinese Taoism.

His dignified appearance is characterized by a long beard, official's attire, and a majestic posture holding a sword.

(Sesshu, Shoki-zu. Edo period)

In Kyoto, Shoki figures have been placed on tiled roofs as a cherished talisman to ward off calamities.

By placing Shoki, who is believed to be stronger than demons, on roofs, Shoki statues became a popular custom in Edo-period Kyoto as an alternative to demon tiles (onigawara) for warding off evil.

Like onigawara and Okinawan shisa, they are deeply intertwined with culture and custom.

Even today, with fewer tiled roofs, walking through the streets of Kyoto reveals houses with Shoki on their roofs.

Mizuki Yoshida's Craftsmanship

Mizuki Yoshida's Shoki statues retain their dignified appearance while possessing a charm that exudes the softness and warmth unique to ceramics.

Her passion for Shoki began during her university days when she encountered Shoki statues perched on the tiled roofs of Kyoto's machiya houses.

Captivated by their presence, Yoshida creates Shoki statues that respect tradition while infusing them with her own sensibility.

From small pieces to large decorative figures that stand out in interiors, all of them convey the warmth of handmade craftsmanship.

Mizuki Yoshida's Shoki carefully unravels its history and historical context, faithfully replicating the historical appearance of Shoki while adding the warmth unique to ceramics in its design.

Its presence embodies a strength that protects families and spaces, while subtly adding the beauty of craftsmanship and tradition to everyday life.
