Kohiki animal carving cup by Takanobu Sawada

Realistic, yet full of charm.
Take a peaceful moment with your favorite cup.

Ceramic artist Takanobu Sawada works from his studio nestled in the countryside of Nantan, Kyoto.

Surrounded by rich natural landscapes, he creates pottery that captures animals with warmth and realism.

Each piece is carefully formed by hand, then trimmed with attention to how it feels in your hand.

The soft, milky-white kohiki surface enhances the natural and gentle texture unique to handmade ceramics.

Craftsmanship with warmth

The animal illustrations are not painted with a brush but carved into the kohiki surface itself.

Each line feels alive with movement, giving the pieces a unique character and warm presence.

Sawada, son of a Kyo-ware and Kiyomizu-ware potter, has been surrounded by ceramics since childhood and now has over 20 years of experience.

In his 30s, he’s already an expert artisan, creating work with both technical mastery and a fresh perspective.

With a balance of refined technique and youthful sensitivity, Sawada produces uniquely Kyoto-inspired ceramics. We hope you’ll enjoy his work in your everyday life.
