Realistic, yet endearing.
Take a quiet moment with your favorite cup.

Deep in the satoyama of Nantan, Kyoto, ceramic artist Takanobu Sawada creates his works surrounded by rich natural beauty.

His pottery features lifelike yet heartwarming depictions of animals, each rendered with warmth and care.

Each piece is carefully shaped and trimmed for comfortable daily use.

The soft, milky-white kohiki clay body highlights the gentle texture unique to earthenware.

Hand-carved animal design by Kyoto ceramic artist Takanobu Sawada

Feel the warmth of handcrafted work

Rather than using a brush, the animal designs are carved directly into the kohiki surface.

Each line has movement and expression, resulting in pieces that radiate warmth and originality.

Born into a family of Kyo and Kiyomizu ware artisans, Sawada has been familiar with pottery since childhood and has over 20 years of experience.

Now in his 30s, he is a skilled and seasoned artist who blends refined technique with a fresh sensibility.

Sawada brings a distinctly Kyoto style to his work—one that feels at home in modern everyday life. Let his craftsmanship enrich your daily routine.
