Handmade Kyoto ceramic plate with animal design by Takanobu Sawada

Realistic yet endearing—
Take a peaceful moment with your favorite cup.

In the tranquil countryside of Nantan, Kyoto, Japanese ceramic artist Takanobu Sawada creates pottery inspired by the rich nature surrounding his studio.

His works feature animals rendered in a style that feels both realistic and warmly expressive—each one bringing a sense of comfort to your daily rituals.

Each piece is carefully shaped by hand, with attention given to its usability and form when held. The soft, milky white base is created using the traditional kohiki technique, giving it the gentle texture unique to handmade pottery.

Feel the warmth of handcrafted tradition

The animal motifs are not painted, but rather carved directly into the kohiki surface, resulting in a unique, tactile texture.

Each line has motion and personality, revealing a distinctive artistry that adds warmth and charm to the piece.

Born into a family of Kyoto pottery artisans, Sawada has been working with ceramics since childhood and now has over 20 years of experience. Despite being in his thirties, he is considered a veteran in the field of traditional Japanese ceramics.
