Hand-carved animal rice bowl by Kyoto ceramic artist

Realistic, yet endearing.
Take a quiet moment with your favorite handmade bowl.

Deep in the countryside of Nantan, Kyoto, ceramic artist Takanobu Sawada creates his work surrounded by nature’s beauty.

His handmade ceramic pieces feature finely carved animals—realistic in form, yet brimming with warmth and gentle charm.

Each bowl is carefully shaped by hand, then trimmed with ease of use in mind, resulting in a form that feels balanced and comfortable to hold.

The soft white surface of the kohiki glaze brings out the natural warmth and texture unique to pottery.

A Bowl Infused with the Warmth of the Artist’s Hand

Instead of using a brush, Sawada carefully scrapes the *kohiki* surface to carve each animal design by hand.

Each line flows with a sense of movement, creating expressive and heartwarming patterns that reveal the artist’s personality.

The son of a Kyo and Kiyomizu-ware potter, Sawada has been immersed in ceramic art since childhood and now has over 20 years of experience.

Despite being in his 30s, he brings the seasoned skill of a veteran, blending tradition with fresh, original ideas.

With refined technique and youthful creativity, Sawada crafts distinctive handmade ceramics that reflect the spirit of Kyoto.

Let his creations add a gentle touch of joy to your everyday meals.

This rice bowl is just the right size for everyday use. Slightly deeper than standard bowls, it holds a generous portion without spilling and fits comfortably in your hand.
