Animal motif rice bowl by Kyoto ceramic artist Takanobu Sawada

Realistic, yet endearing.
Take a moment to relax with your favorite handmade bowl.

In the forested countryside of Nantan, Kyoto, ceramic artist Takanobu Sawada creates pottery surrounded by the beauty of nature.

His work features animals that are lifelike in form, yet gentle and warm in expression—each piece telling its own quiet story.

Every bowl is carefully formed by hand, then trimmed with the user's comfort in mind, resulting in a shape that feels balanced and pleasant to hold.

The soft white *kohiki* glaze enhances the natural, earthy charm that only handmade ceramic can offer.

A Bowl that Radiates the Artist’s Hand

Rather than painted, each animal motif is hand-carved by scraping into the white *kohiki* surface.

The fluidity of the lines and expressive motion give each piece a sense of life, showcasing Sawada’s unique artistic style.

Raised in a Kyoto pottery family, Sawada has been immersed in ceramic making since childhood. With over 20 years of experience, he’s already considered a seasoned artisan in his 30s.

Blending youthful sensibility with refined skill, he creates ceramics full of originality rooted in the Kyoto tradition.
