Handmade ceramic bowl with animal carving by Takanobu Sawada

Realistic, yet endearing.
Take a quiet moment with your favorite handmade cup.

In the peaceful countryside of Nantan, Kyoto, ceramic artist Takanobu Sawada runs his studio surrounded by lush nature.

He crafts pottery adorned with animals—realistic in form, yet full of warmth and charm—each piece a gentle companion in daily life.

Every bowl is carefully shaped by hand and trimmed for comfort, with a form that fits beautifully in the hand.

The soft, milky-white *kohiki* glaze highlights the gentle texture unique to handmade ceramic ware.

A Bowl that Carries the Artist’s Touch

The animal motifs are not painted—they are carefully carved by scraping into the white *kohiki* surface.

Every line has movement, giving the designs a unique warmth and artistic character.

Born into a family of Kyo-ware and Kiyomizu-ware potters, Sawada has been immersed in ceramics since childhood and now has over 20 years of experience.

In his 30s, he is already a seasoned artisan, known for combining deep craftsmanship with a youthful, modern sensibility.
