Takanobu Sawada's handmade pottery

Realistic, yet delightfully charming.
Take a moment to unwind with your favorite cup.

Ceramic artist Takanobu Sawada creates his works in a quiet countryside studio nestled in the satoyama (rural mountains) of Nantan City, Kyoto.

Surrounded by nature, he crafts vessels adorned with animals—realistic in form, yet full of warmth and charm.

Each piece is carefully hand-shaped and trimmed to fit comfortably in your hand, making everyday use a joy.

The soft milky-white *kohiki* glaze brings out the gentle, earthy character unique to pottery.

Hand-carved kohiki surface

Feel the warmth of handmade craftsmanship

Rather than painted on, the animal motifs are carved by scraping away the *kohiki* surface, creating expressive, textured lines.

Each stroke feels alive, imbuing the piece with a sense of character and sincerity.

Born into a family of Kyo-ware and Kiyomizu-ware artisans, Sawada has been immersed in pottery since childhood—and now, with over 20 years of experience, he’s a seasoned artist despite being in his thirties.

His works blend refined technique with a fresh sensibility, resulting in unique pieces that reflect the spirit of Kyoto.

Cup by Takanobu Sawada

Sawada’s creations are infused with Kyoto’s tradition and his own originality. We invite you to discover their charm as part of your daily life.
