Shunsan Kiln, Continuing Its Legacy at Sennyu-ji in Kyoto
Shunsan Kiln was founded in 1931 at the foot of Mount Higashiyama in Kyoto, near Sennyu-ji Temple.
While carrying on the tradition of Kiyomizu ware, the kiln continues to create vessels that showcase beautiful painting and decoration, featuring seasonal flowers and plants as well as classical motifs.
Each matcha bowl is finished by hand, possessing the delicacy and elegance characteristic of Kyoto ceramics. Its appearance changes depending on the angle from which it is viewed, offering a variety of expressions to enjoy.

Rich Expressions Born from Layered Handwork
The appeal of Shunsan Kiln lies in the rich expression created by the harmonious combination of the vessel's form, painting, glaze, and decoration.
In addition to delicate brushwork, some pieces incorporate techniques such as gold decoration, luster painting, and etching, with multiple layers of handwork applied to complete a single matcha bowl.
The kiln's distinctive elegance is also evident in its ability to remain festive without being overly ornate, preserving the soft texture of the clay and glaze.

A Matcha Bowl Enjoyable to Behold and Use
Shunsan Kiln places great importance on creating vessels that are enjoyable to look at and bring joy when used.
While the carefully finished details offer pleasure to behold, the bowl also retains the warmth of a matcha bowl when held in the hand.
Whether enjoyed with a seasonal bowl of matcha or cherished as a piece that brings the craftsmanship of Kyoto into everyday life, this is a work designed to be kept and enjoyed for many years.

Shop Owner's Comments
This Shunsan Kiln matcha bowl features vibrant nandina berries painted on a rustic, powerful clay surface.
The gracefully spreading branches and leaves and charming red berries are rendered in delicate overglaze enamels. The vibrant colors of the nandina stand out beautifully against the textured surface of the vessel, adding a warm touch to the winter landscape.
Because nandina is associated with turning misfortune into good fortune, it has long been cherished as a plant that wards off evil and brings good luck. This bowl harmoniously combines the rustic character unique to Shunsan Kiln with an auspicious motif.
