Takunobu Sawada is a potter who has his studio in the satoyama (foothills) of Nantan City, Kyoto.
Surrounded by rich natural scenery, he creates pottery adorned with realistic yet warm depictions of animals.
Each piece is carefully shaped, with forms carved out to ensure ease of use when held.
The soft, milky white slip-ware base enhances the gentle texture unique to pottery.
Pottery that embodies the warmth of handcrafted work
The animal patterns are not drawn with a brush, but rather created by scraping away the slip-ware base.
Each line has a dynamic quality, resulting in a unique and warm finish.
Takunobu Sawada, whose father is a Kyoto-ware/Kiyomizu-ware potter, has been familiar with pottery since childhood and already has 20 years of experience in pottery making.
At 30, he is a highly skilled craftsman who has reached the level of a veteran.
Sawada-san combines youthful sensibility with refined technique to create highly original pottery unique to Kyoto.
