Handmade ceramic mug by Kyoto-based artist Takanobu Sawada

Realistic yet heartwarming—
Take a peaceful moment with your favorite handmade mug.

In the tranquil hills of Nantan, Kyoto, Japanese ceramic artist Takanobu Sawada creates pottery inspired by the beauty of nature.

His animal motifs feel both lifelike and warmly expressive, designed to bring a quiet joy to everyday life.

Each mug is carefully hand-formed with attention to comfort and ease of use. The smooth, milky-white base is achieved using the traditional kohiki technique, highlighting the gentle texture unique to handmade pottery.

Feel the warmth of Japanese craftsmanship

Rather than using a brush, Sawada carves each animal illustration into the kohiki clay, giving the lines texture and character.

Each piece reflects his unique artistic voice—filled with motion, emotion, and the soft beauty of traditional Kyoto ceramic design.

Born to a family of Kyo and Kiyomizu ware artisans, Sawada began making pottery in childhood and now has over 20 years of experience. In his thirties, he is already recognized as a master of his craft.
