Kyoto handmade ceramic animal mug by Takanobu Sawada

Realistic, yet full of charm—
Take a relaxing moment with your favorite cup.

Nestled in the lush countryside of Nantan, Kyoto, ceramic artist Takanobu Sawada crafts pottery that brings animals to life with a warm and expressive touch.

Inspired by the nature that surrounds his studio, each piece combines realism with a gentle, handmade feel—making everyday moments more delightful.

Every mug is hand-shaped with great care, designed to feel balanced and comfortable in your hand. The soft, milky-white finish of traditional kohiki pottery enhances the organic texture of the ceramic.

Hand-carved kohiki ceramic detail

The warmth of handmade detail

Rather than painted with a brush, each animal design is carved directly into the kohiki surface using the traditional sgraffito technique.

Each line carries energy and depth, giving the piece a sense of life that’s distinctly handmade and uniquely Sawada’s.

Growing up as the son of a Kyo-ware and Kiyomizu-ware ceramic artist, Sawada has been immersed in pottery since childhood. Now in his 30s, he has already built a 20-year career grounded in experience and skill.

Blending Kyoto tradition with a fresh artistic sensibility, Sawada’s work is both functional and expressive—perfect for adding a handcrafted touch to your everyday life.
