Kenji Matsuoka of Heian Rakudo runs his quiet pottery studio in Yamashina, Kyoto.

Born into a lineage of Kyo-ware and Kiyomizu-ware artisans, he naturally embraced working with clay, crafting pottery that integrates seamlessly into daily life.

Heian Rakudo’s pottery is designed for effortless use—warm, inviting, and meant to complement daily rituals.

Each piece carries a quiet charm, bringing a subtle elegance to any setting.

In his peaceful studio, Matsuoka dedicates himself fully to his craft, shaping every piece with careful intention.

Though he creates each piece by hand, he is supported by his wife, whose encouragement and assistance help make their studio a labor of love.
