Matcha Bowl with Seasonal Flowers

This matcha bowl is from Hanakozan Kiln, which has been in business for four generations in Kyoto's Gojozaka district. Inspired by the seasonal flowers that adorn Japan, it depicts beautiful seasonal scenes within the vessel. Amidst the vibrant colors, one can feel the simple beauty of nature. This bowl adds a touch of seasonal color not only to tea ceremonies but also to daily tea time.

Elegant Colors Painted with Traditional Japanese Pigments

At Hanakozan Kiln, each piece is hand-painted, valuing traditional Japanese pigments. A significant characteristic is the slight unevenness and three-dimensional effect created by layering colors with delicate brushwork and carefully building up the pigments.

The soft hues, intricate depictions, and the expressive brushstrokes unique to hand-painting. The warm texture of the pottery and the vibrant painting harmonize, allowing you to enjoy a rich expression depending on the viewing angle and how the light hits it.

Hanakozan Kiln's Vessels, Following the Style of Kenzan

The style of Hanakozan Kiln inherits the aesthetic sensibility of Ogata Kenzan, a leading potter of the Edo period. Kenzan was a master who created numerous free and elegant works by combining the rustic texture of pottery with painterly decoration, using familiar natural subjects such as flowers and plants.

While utilizing the warm expression unique to earthenware, Hanakozan Kiln's vessels freely depict nature's four seasons. Inheriting the aesthetic sensibility of Kyoto ware that originated with Kenzan, these matcha bowls are finished to be vibrant and approachable, enjoyable in modern life.

Comment from the Owner

This is a matcha bowl from Hanakozan Kiln, featuring vibrantly and gracefully depicted cherry blossoms.

Using translucent Japanese pigments, the plumply painted cherry blossoms beautifully adorn the vessel. The soft colors and bold brushwork harmonize, creating an elegant Kyoyaki style with a touch of Kenzan's charm.

It is a bright and elegant bowl that allows you to enjoy the beautiful scenery of spring.
