Artist Biography
Issei Kato (Art name: Jyosui)
Born in Toki City, Gifu Prefecture, Japan, in the 1930s
Graduated from Kyoto Prefectural Ceramic Technical Training Institute in the 1950s
Studied painting techniques under Fukuda Shosai (Rikisaburo)
Founded Jyosui Togakaen Studio in Imakumano, Higashiyama, Kyoto, in 1961
Since then, he has devoted his career to creating Iroe Kyoto pottery, earning numerous awards at Kyo-ware and Kiyomizu-ware exhibitions.
In the 1990s, he received both the Governor of Kyoto Award and the Mayor of Kyoto Award.
In 2020, he was recognized as a Contemporary Master Craftsman by Japan’s Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare.
Currently, he leads Jyosui Togakaen, preserving Kyoto’s rich ceramic traditions.
