About the Artist

Zensho Yamaoka

  • Born in 1942 in Mie Prefecture, Japan
  • Graduated from Kyoto Prefectural Ceramic Technical School in 1959; studied under master Zenpo
  • Established his own kiln under the name “Zensho” in 1969
  • Selected for the Tanko Biennale Tea Art Exhibition (1992–1998)
  • Received the Kyoto Governor’s Prize three times at the Kyoto Overglaze Ceramic Art Exhibition (1998)
  • Awarded twice at the Kyoto Prefectural Design Competition (2000–2008)
  • Five-time winner at the Kyo-ware and Kiyomizu-ware Exhibition (2000–2008)
  • Selected for the National Traditional Craftsperson Exhibition (2001)
  • Exhibited at Nihombashi Mitsukoshi (2002)
  • Certified as a Traditional Craftsperson in 2006
  • Held solo exhibition at Kyoto Takashimaya (2008)
  • Won Uji City Tourism Association Chairman’s Award at Kyo-ware Exhibition (2010)
  • Received Distinguished Service Award at National Traditional Craftsperson Convention (2011)
  • Featured on NHK's “The Mark of Beauty” (Kyoto Ceramics episode) in 2012
  • Awarded the Kyoto Ceramic Association Chairman’s Prize in 2013
