Handmade Japanese ceramic plate with animal design

Realistic yet endearing.
Take a peaceful moment with your favorite cup.

In the wooded hills of Nantan, Kyoto, Japanese ceramic artist Takanobu Sawada creates handmade pottery that captures animals with both realism and warmth.

Working in a nature-rich studio environment, he brings to life charming, expressive creatures on everyday vessels.

Each piece is carefully hand-formed and carved to feel comfortable and easy to use in your hands.

The soft, milky surface is achieved through a traditional Japanese *kohiki* glaze, which brings out the gentle texture characteristic of pottery.

Crafted with the Warmth of Human Hands

Rather than painting the animals with a brush, Sawada carves through the *kohiki* glaze to reveal expressive silhouettes beneath.

Each line conveys motion, character, and care—resulting in pottery that feels truly alive.

Born into a family of traditional Kyo-ware and Kiyomizu-ware artisans, Sawada has been immersed in ceramics since childhood. Now in his 30s, he brings over 20 years of experience to his craft.

Combining time-honored techniques with fresh ideas, he continues to craft one-of-a-kind works rooted in the traditions of Kyoto pottery.

Each piece is a fusion of tradition, creativity, and technical mastery. Bring a piece of Kyoto’s handmade charm into your home and experience its quiet beauty every day.

Owner's Comment

This handmade ceramic plate is crafted using the labor-intensive *tatara* technique, which involves shaping flat sheets of clay by hand—a traditional method rarely seen in mass production.

Its flat surface makes it practical for serving desserts, side dishes, or salads. You'll find yourself reaching for it again and again.

Each one features an expressive animal design that brings a smile just by looking at it.

I hope you find one that becomes your favorite.
